FDA public hearing on psychedelic therapy

On September 14, the FDA held a public hearing on the future therapeutic use of psychedelic medicines in supervised settings. Around 80 commenters spoke for two minutes each before a panel from the FDA and four other federal agencies. The four topics were: (1) provider training and credentialing, (2) patient safety, (3) access, and (4) standards for data collection.

The sharpest split was over who must be in the room. Peter Hendricks of the University of Alabama at Birmingham asked the FDA not to require psychotherapy with every psychedelic. Each drug's label, he said, should require only the level of support its trials tested: monitoring for safety, psychological support, or full psychotherapy. A blanket requirement "would fall hardest on the people least able to find care elsewhere." Mindbloom, an at-home ketamine therapy platform, argued against "locking this inside clinics in a handful of major cities."

All four topics concern the care around the therapy rather than the psychedelic medicine itself. The ability to submit a public comment is open to anyone until 11:59 p.m. ET on October 5th.
