About the Spirit Tech Collective

Spirit Tech Collective is a growing field of people devoted to a single question: how can technology be in highest service to spiritual development?

We are founders, builders, investors, and wisdom keepers. We believe the emergence of Spirit Tech is inevitable, and feel called to ensure it emerges with a different set of rules and principles than those that govern the current tech ecosystem.

We organize around a sacred fire that holds the collective vision. We tend it slowly, carefully, with reverence.

WEEKLY DIGESTAug 24–30, 2026

Meditation becomes medicine and AI gurus go mainstream · Aug 24–30, 2026

The 2 big things in Spirit Tech this week: Headspace, the app that mainstreamed meditation, is being acquired by Sword Health for an estimated $200 to $300 million. Sword Health ($4 billion valuation) made its name in AI-guided virtual physical therapy for back and joint pain, not contemplative practice. The acquisition involves not just the meditation app but Headspace’s entire parent company, OrangeDot, once valued at $3 billion in 2021 after Headspace's merger with Ginger at the peak of the pandemic mental-health boom. That valuation belonged to a moment when anxious, housebound users poured into wellness apps and venture money poured in after them. The tailwind has since faded and capital dried up across digital health, while buyers, worn out by dozens of single-purpose apps, shifted their spending to integrated platforms. Taken together, these forces are how a company once valued at $3 billion comes to sell for $200 to $300 million. For Spirit Tech builders, it sharpens the exit question: is a contemplative app worth more on its own, or absorbed into a clinical platform? If absorbed, meditation stops being a standalone consumer subscription and becomes a reimbursed part of a care plan, reaching users who came for their back pain or other ailments, not their spiritual life. The prize, and the risk, is spiritual practice delivered as medicine, and whether it can maintain its depth once a care plan, not the seeker, sets the dose. AI versions of gurus are not new, but this month the trend crossed into the mainstream, cataloged in an Associated Press feature and staged as a lifelike Sadhguru avatar demoed in Los Angeles. The field it described is crowded: GitaGPT - a free Bhagavad Gita chatbot, Sadhguru’s Miracle of the Mind app, Deepak Chopra’s Digital Deepak and Hue Learn’s Innerverse 360, which pairs an “Ask AI” feature with live sessions from real monks. Backers make an access argument: a free chatbot can put scripture and a listening presence in front of someone in distress at any hour, without the cost or distance of human teachers. Scholars are unconvinced, a sacred text “needs a community and a context that interprets it,” Northeastern’s Liz Bucar told the AP, while theologian Noreen Herzfeld argued that awakening “takes physical presence” and a teacher who can challenge you. For builders of spiritual companions, mainstream arrival moves the bar from novelty to credibility and depth: a chatbot optimized to please its user tends to affirm rather than challenge, so it cannot offer the interpretive community or the embodied friction these critics say real spiritual growth requires.

AI versions of famous gurus have gone mainstream and the first serious pushback from theologians has arrived with them.
