A smart camera that detects REM sleep and plays audio cues
The INSPEC is a lucid dreaming device with a night-vision smart camera that detects eye movements during REM sleep and triggers audio and light cues to promote lucidity. Like having your own personal sleep lab technician that watches you sleep and alerts you when you are dreaming.
I set out to develop an EEG headband over a decade ago that can detect REM sleep and trigger audio cues to induce lucid dreams... but couldn't distinguish between the spikes in the data caused by rhythmic breathing patterns from the spikes caused by electrical activity from rapid eye movement patterns during REM sleep. So I trained a night-vision camera on my face in order to figure out what was really going on... and quickly found that I could see REM sleep clear as day in the video recordings and abandoned the EEG approach in favor of using the advances in machine vision to develop an algorithm to detect REM sleep in real time from a video feed.
I am interested in what researchers would need from the data. And would appreciate feedback on the lucidity training programs in the free companion app on Android and iOS, Lucid Scribe. It has a Lucidity Cue Training research study that tests the effect of different audio cues combined with cognitive training, a Guided Sensory Induction exercise that links the audio cues to a state of mindfulness, and a Prospective Memory Trainer that builds a list targets to look out for each day based on dream signs from your journal.
