The big thing in Spirit Tech this week
SoundSelf is leaving Steam on June 17 and replacing its $10 consumer game with a $7,000 clinical vibroacoustic system sold to therapy practices
Robin Arnott's SoundSelf launched in 2020 as a "technodelic," a VR experience that turned the user's voice into synchronized light, vibration, and adaptive music to induce altered states without substances. The science held up: EEG studies showed brain-state shifts resembling classic psychedelic experience, and participants reported moments of unity and transcendence within 15 minutes. But consumer consciousness-tech economics did not, and SoundSelf is now bundled with strobe glasses and a quad-transducer vibroacoustic bed into a clinical package deployed in mental health and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy practices. The 700x price jump validates the underlying technology category while pointing at a question other Spirit Tech consumer companies are about to face: can accessible altered states pay for themselves at consumer scale, or does the depth that justifies institutional pricing exist only when someone else is writing the check?
