One email a week — the signal we’re sensing in the field. Unsubscribe anytime.
Consciousness engineering has lacked a shared target. Maël Donoso's "Human Brain Zero" paper, published in Frontiers in Neuroscience this week under his Ouroboros Neurotechnologies affiliation, proposes one: HB0, the hypothetical minimum neural state from which consciousness could reemerge. Defined by TMS reactivity, fMRI connectivity, and EEG complexity proxies, HB0 is deliberately falsifiable: a discovered state with lower complexity that still supports consciousness recovery would force revision. In Lisbon, Openwater presented its Open-LIFU technology at the International Neuromodulation Society congress, non-invasive focused ultrasound precise enough to access deep brain structures. The concept and the hardware are converging: consciousness research now has both an engineering target and an instrument plausibly capable of probing it.
On the distribution front, Peloton's Breathwrk app launched "7 Days of Breathwork" with Dr. Chelsea Jackson Roberts, a Peloton instructor holding a Ph.D. from Emory. Peloton also began integrating its meditation classes directly into Breathwrk. The distribution signal matters more than the content: contemplative practices are being pulled into mainstream fitness ecosystems rather than having to build their own. The open question is whether Peloton treats breathwork as a retention feature, another slot next to sleep stories, or deepens into the contemplative layer that Spirit Tech 2.0 left on the table.
A bioRxiv preprint closes the week with a methodological finding that reaches beyond psychedelics. Frequency-resolved EEG microstate analysis, applied to psilocybin microdosing and acute DMT data, showed that the analytical method changes what the science detects: standard broadband EEG missed frequency-specific shifts that the finer approach caught. For Spirit Tech companies building neurofeedback for meditation, breathwork, or altered states, the implication is direct: how you measure the brain constrains what you can claim your product does.
